Small flooring changes could make a big difference to your home’s energy efficiency while keeping the cost down. Homeowners looking to reduce their energy bills might want to start from the ground up - literally. According to a spokesperson for Grant Store, improving the insulation of your floors can have a significant impact on energy efficiency, helping to keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
A spokesperson said: “The type of flooring and underlay you choose can play a major role in how well your home retains heat. Proper floor insulation reduces heat loss and helps cut down on the need for constant heating or cooling.”

One of the most effective yet often overlooked tools in improving energy efficiency is underlay - the layer between your subfloor and top flooring surface.
“Underlay acts as an extra barrier that helps trap heat inside your home,” the spokesperson explained.
“Some of the latest materials are designed to reflect heat upwards, keeping rooms warmer for longer and easing pressure on your heating system.”
Many people assume only carpeted floors benefit from insulation, but that’s no longer the case.
Carpet underlay is particularly effective, offering both warmth and sound insulation but there are now specialised underlays for laminate, vinyl and wooden floors too — all aimed at improving thermal performance.

Replacing old flooring with energy-efficient alternatives is one of the easiest ways to reduce long-term energy costs.
The spokesperson added: “If you’re dealing with outdated flooring, upgrading to modern carpets and pairing them with a high-quality underlay can significantly boost insulation. In many cases, this could reduce your heating reliance and cut bills.
“Replacing an old carpet with a new one and a thick underlay could save up to £150 a year on energy bills. While that might not sound life-changing, it adds up over time - and the savings could eventually pay for the upgrade itself.”
“You don’t always need to replace the entire floor. Installing an insulated underlay beneath your existing flooring - whether carpet or hard flooring - can still make a noticeable difference. Some solutions cost as little as £30 per room and could save you up to £100 a year.”
By making this change in your home, you could bring down the cost of your energy bills without having to break the bank.
