SMERSH is a conjunction of two Russian words: "SMERt' SHpionam", (Смерть Шпионам), which means "Death to Spies". Rewatched Live and Let Die last night, featuring Roger Moore’s first outing as Bond. He fits the roll from the start. I haven’t read the novel, but given the less-than-Earth-destroying plot, I’m thinking it’s probably not far from the book. There’s really only one serious “gadget” in the flick— The watch with a circular saw, now upgraded to include a powerful, focused electromagnet (not sure how that would work, but okay). And that’s it. I suppose the “anti-shark” “compressed air” exploding bullet/grenade counts, but compared to cars with machine guns and ejector seats, this movie is mild on the gimmicks. Oh, there’s a stand-up hang-glider, but those exist anyway, so not really a uniquely Bond device.
