What happens in Only Murders in the Building Season 4 episode 8?
The Westies are ambushed
As the trio plans to ambush the Westies in Only Murders in the Building Season 4 episode 8, they decide to plan somewhere else than the Arconia, as it still feels unsafe. Though they are not keen on involving the actors in this, Eugene suggests the studio that is uncannily similar to Charles' apartment.
After several ideas being rejected, everyone finally agrees on inviting the Westies to Oliver’s apartment, to a star-studded game of Oh Hell.
When the Westies finally arrive at Oliver’s, they immediately threaten the actors and the trio with their ham carving knives, making it seem like they are actually killers. However, to prove their story, they finally reveal how each one of them came to know Dudenoff and eventually ended up living in the West Tower of the Arconia.
What happened to Dudenoff?
It is shown in flashbacks that how a lonely Dudenoff, after the death of his wife, connected to each of the Westies.
From ordering food from Alfonso's and Inez's (Daphne Rubin-Vega) restaurant to doing a film class with Vince (Richard Fish) and Rudy (Kumail Nanjiani) as students, Dudenoff bonded with each of them.
Since Dudenoff’s wife was a music teacher, each time an unit of their floor was opened, they took it so that his wife could use it for her classes or let the students stay there.
When his wife passed away, Dudenoff could not part with these spaces and so he came up with a scheme to sublet these apartments to the family he had built for himself via the Oh Hell game nights held on Friday at his place.
However, when Dudenoff took off to Portugal to live his dream life, the Westies kept on cashing his checks, so the scheme started by Dudenoff could continue.
Is Dudenoff dead?
Once the Westies finish their story, Helga (Alexandra Templer), who was first heard on the ham radio in episode 3, enters. She revealed how she inherited her father’s locksmith business and met Dudenoff as he installed a keypad on his apartment door as he kept misplacing his keys.
She bonded with him over Oh Hell game night and Perfect Strangers and became a part of the Friday game night group. Helga mentions that she did find a note on her door from Dudenoff, mentioning that he was off to Portugal. The power surged as she read the note, which she took as a quirk of the old incinerator.
However, when her friends started to get strange and distant after the Only Murders podcast came out, Helga became suspicious and thought that it was them who murdered Dudenoff. Despite not having any proof, her suspicion stayed and she decided to move out.
Even after this, others continue to stick to the Portugal story. Eventually, Mabel reveals that they have Dudenoff's shoulder replacement and thus know that he is dead.
Finally, a film canister that was hidden under Vince’s floorboard revealed how Dudenoff died. The same night Helga had received the note, the Westies were invited to Dudenoff's place where he said that he only had a few more months to live and when he passed away, their dream cast would break up.
To work around this problem, Dudenoff suggested they burn his body in the incinerator and tell everyone that he moved to Portugal. He gave them the permission to keep using his social security checks.
The group found out that since he had already taken a lot of pills, it was not possible for them to save Dudenoff. He shoots one final movie for Helga, explaining why she was left out of all this.
With this, Dudenoff’s mystery is solved, though Mabel decides that they will not feature this on their podcast as she sees the Westies as some kind of kindred spirits.
However, the mystery of Sazz’s murder continues and with only two episodes remaining, viewers are eagerly waiting for that to unfold.
